In our Trends Talk, which airs repeatedly this weekend on Trends Z, he describes it as “a catamaran that moves very fast” but has “encountered tumultuous seas over the past five years.”

From Covid to American customs duties, inflation, and rising raw material prices, the biscuit factory has weathered the storm and grown by 10% annually thanks to an ambition: significant investments in the production process and flexibility. That is the key. Thierry Huet does not mince words when discussing the Belgian tax system, which he finds insufficiently favorable to entrepreneurship.

Why did you choose to become a “small multinational”?
For a Belgian company, it is a necessity to reach all corners of the world if you want to grow. This is clearly Desobry’s DNA. This also involves a choice for shorter margins and higher volumes. This allows us to achieve the critical mass needed to continue our industrial investments.

How do you evaluate the Belgian system in this regard?
We have made choices for our Welfare State that differ from surrounding countries. Thirty or forty years ago, we decided to have extremely high taxation on labor income. Today, we are practically the only European country among our neighbors to tax at 40% as soon as gross salary reaches 40,000 euros. Comparing based on a median gross salary of 3,600 euros per month, you earn 2,400 euros in Belgium and 2,800 in the Netherlands! In our country, we have flattened the difference between working people and inactive people, giving a huge amount of money to the State to redistribute. However, the Netherlands is not an underdeveloped country; it has developed a different concept of the State.

Is this difference detrimental to your business because purchasing power is lower?
Yes, but it goes beyond that. We opted for a very Latin, very Jacobin, and centralizing approach with a protective State. Compared to the Anglo-Saxon world, we have, in a way, anesthetized our people. The result is fewer entrepreneurs, less daring, and fewer large companies. The second impact is that when people look at their net salary, with a 400-euro net difference, they will go back to the company to ask for more, but 100 net euros represents 300 gross euros. In other words, we have reduced the competitiveness of our companies! This initial choice has extremely strong consequences: entrepreneurship is much riskier in Belgium. Over the past thirty years, many companies have been sold, and their decision-making centers have moved away.

But you are staying in Belgium, aren’t you?
Yes, I am staying in Belgium because it is in my DNA. The future of our country and Wallonia lies in developing entrepreneurship by supporting innovation. We need to simplify the rules, and the fiscal aspect is essential. Let’s try to reduce corporate tax for industries and reduce employer contributions, so that companies like ours can develop self-financing. This will allow us to acquire technology to go global.

Countries like Ireland or Portugal decided, during difficult budgetary times, to become very fiscally attractive. Are these models?
They are models, yes. This is the whole difference between the Latin model and the Anglo-Saxon model, which is very business-oriented and very pragmatic. It’s about taking measures that are clear to everyone and simple to apply. We have business aid, but it’s very complicated; there are applications to submit, it takes time… Indeed, look at Ireland or Portugal; these are totally different options.

A Trends Talk not to be missed.

Source: https://trends.levif.be/a-la-une/politique-economique/thierry-huet-desobry-a-cause-de-notre-fiscalite-lentrepreneuriat-est-beaucoup-trop-risque-en-belgique/

Thierry Huet, CEO of Biscuiterie Desobry, makes a strong appeal for a fundamental review of our model.
